FreeMap User Guide Manual
User Guide Manual

Welcome to the user guide, today we will explore all features of FreeMap for end users.

First things first. Thank you for using the product. If you run into any issues, please reach out and describe your use case. We aim to make using maps as easy as possible.

This map has many features including raster, vector, remote, and local data.

We do all this on the fly as you can pan around the map with mouse or touch.

Pro tip: In mobile, please pan slowly to avoid triggering the double-tap zoom. If you master this feature, you can quickly zoom in as you scroll.

Navigation

Although the map should be positioned in your project area automatically on load, you may need to find another location.

You can double-click, scroll, or pinch to zoom. Also, for accessibility, there are the plus-minus zoom controls in the top left. You can also click and drag to box zoom.

To move, use the arrow keys or click and drag. Note when touching it helps to wait for 0.5s between movements to give slow devices time to think.

A great way to quickly get around is the search box in the bottom left. By typing a place name into the box and hitting enter, you will fly there!

Using Data Layers

There are a few kinds of layers as really this is anything we add on the map.

Base maps: in order they appear, we have selected Satellite/Arial Imagery, Open Topo Map, and Open Street Map. These excellent base layers can make it easy to find a reference or landmark you know.

Additionally, there will be other layers that you can add depending on the FreeMap's configuration. You will see these below the base maps. It's recommended to view them one at a time, but you can click around and experiment.

Pro Tip: WMS overlays load images from an external server; they need good networking, and more than 3-5 may bog down slow devices. On the other hand, vector data takes longer to load but will work in more unstable conditions. It's important to load only the data you need so the device stays responsive.

To configure a wms server add the url search parameter: server=https://some.wmsServerUrl

You may also want to directly upload your own images and geojson data files.
